It’s also worth bearing in mind that you can get a 30-day free trial (and that’s 30 days of use, not just 30 days from when you sign up) to try it out before you buy, and see whether it’s for you. There’s also a lot of great discount codes to be found out there for money off, especially if you take part in NaNoWriMo, or Camp NaNoWriMo, where you can get a discount just for taking part. £47 could seem a little pricey for a piece of software, but given the sheer breadth of features Scrivener has, and that it is a one time purchase, as opposed to a subscription, I think it’s definitely worth the money. Is Scrivener for Windows worth the money?Ĭurrently, Scrivener for Windows costs £47, the same as the MacOS version, which seems fair, given it now has the same amount of features. I’ve also only recently found out that you can heavily customize the appearance of Scrivener, and so I’ve been experimenting with the different built in themes like Dark mode and Violet Haze, and adding my own backgrounds and images to the composition mode. Whilst I can’t speak for what the current MacOS version is like, Scrivener 3 for Windows is very much the Scrivener I remembered, with all my favorite features from the Corkboard, to composition mode, project statistics and split screen mode.

The only real differences between the Windows and Mac versions now are that some features are found in different menus, and there’s some slight differences in appearance, but I haven’t found any missing features. The developers finally released Scrivener 3 for Windows last year, and whilst it’s annoying that it took so long for a comparable version to the Mac to be released, I feel it’s been worth the wait. I’m now part way through my free trial of Scrivener 3 for Windows, and I’m loving it! So let’s discuss: Is Scrivener for Windows as good as Scrivener for Mac? However, I’d heard that recently Scrivener for Windows had finally somewhat caught up with the Mac version, and so when my parents offered me their old Windows desktop computer, I thought, what the hell? Let’s give it a go.

I actually really liked Novlr (see my review here!), but the fact you had to pay a yearly subscription for something that had a lot less features than Scrivener, rather than a one time price for the best writing software you could buy, put me off. So I tried out some other options on my Chromebook, from free, simple word processors like Google Docs, to subscription-based writer specific things like Novlr. I toyed with eventually replacing my Chromebook with a Windows laptop, but if I would end up having a subpar version of Scrivener, it didn’t seem worth it. And of course, you can’t get Scrivener for Chromebooks. The problem was that my MacBook was old and breathed its last a couple of years later, and I had to hastily replace my expensive laptop with the cheapest one I could find which was a Chromebook. I adored Scrivener, and that was without even knowing about or using half of the features.

I first got the software years ago on my old MacBook using a discount code I got from winning NaNoWriMo, and to be honest, it’s some of the best money I’ve ever spent.

Whilst I previously had a MacBook and loved using it, I can’t afford to replace it with another £1000 laptop every few years, and so have since had to switch to cheaper options. This isn’t overly surprising, as I feel like a lot of tech companies prioritize Mac, but when you look at the price of Apple products, it makes it so that many people just can’t use the software. A Windows version has been available for years, but it had far fewer features and was less polished and far less usable than the superior Mac version. There was previously one big problem with Scrivener though, and that was that you basically had to own a Mac for it to be worthwhile buying. Many consider it to be the best software specifically for writers, and it has plenty of devoted fans, myself included. If you hang around in writer circles for long enough, you will inevitably hear the program Scrivener come up.
